70's Today
Today's Seventies Moment was brought to you by the Toronto Transit
Commision. This morning, I was waiting for my street car with a freshly lit
cigarette in my mouh. Within seconds, there were two street cars, back to back that pulled up to my stop. In order to get one extra puff on the cancer stick, I tell the driver of the first street car that I'll hop on the next one.I hop on the next street car and needlessly explain to this fellow,
who's driving an empty street car, that I simply wanted one more puff, and THAT's why I jumped on this empty car. He says, "you didn't have to butt out, you could have finished it on the car ... it's empty".So I said, "so ... you wouldn't mind if I smoke?"
He replies, "not so long as the car is empty, you keep a window open ...
and you give me one of your cigarettes".So I pass him a cigarette, (he has his own lighter) and I sit back in my
regular seat (adjacent to two windows) and we drive up Spadina Avenue both, as they say in Britain, sucking on a morning fag.JUST LIKE THE SEVENTIES BABY!
Upon my disembarking of the streetcar, I told the Jamaican black guy
driving the street car that if this ever came back to me, that I'd say that the street car driver was a short Chinaman with thick glasses and a heavy accent, who kept going on about 'Momo Steering Wheels'.He seemed ok with that.
